A Conversation about Music and Marketing

Interesting story on online music marketing this weekend, a refreshing success from an industry that’s struggled and changed with the move online more than many. Check out Laura Sydell’s report “Boosting Music Sales, One Blog at a Time,” from NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday.Of particular interest is how Vagrant Records promotes the Canadian artist City and Colour online on MySpace, through email, and to bloggers. Dallas Green (City and Colour) never thought he would promote his music through online conversations with fans, but that, not radio play, is the new business model for music.Says Jeremy Maciak, head of marketing for Vagrant Records, “It’s about a slow build and having that intricate and honest conversation with our fans and potential audience. Sometimes that takes months, years, to build.”That’s the long-term proposition and opportunity for web content marketing in all businesses.- Collin
