Linking Up Your Network for 2009, Part 2: LinkedIn or Facebook?

In this segment of Linking Up Your Network for 2009, I pick up on some bits of conversation and articles I’ve had on the question of whether a business networker should be on LinkedIn, Facebook, or both.In general, LinkedIn is more of a business network and Facebook is more of a social network. MySpace may be more of an entertainment network. It all depends on the people you want to connect with and the purpose for making and maintaining the connections. You may want to connect with different people on different social networks, and you may want to use different social networks for different purposes. The blunt stereotypical view is that LInkedIn is for adult business professionals and the others are for kids socializing.Maybe. But recent research by the Pew Research Center shows that more adults are using the social networks for personal reasons.Chris Rollyson, managing director of CSRA, a management consultancy specializing in social media and Web 2.0, likens it to going to a restaurant. “How many restaurants do you go to in three months? You don’t need to go to six or seven restaurants to get a meal.”But you may go to six or seven restaurants for different purposes and to have the proper mood for the people you are meeting.“When we invite people for a drink or to a restaurant or coffee,” he says, “we try to select a venue to reflect the person, the kind of conversation we want to have.”For an analytic framework developed by Mr. Rollyson to help you parse the social networking universe, read his piece, ”LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter: Where Do I Need to Be?”Stay Tuned for Part 3…-Collin
