Roll Back, Rolling Stone

I got a chance to check out the new issue of Rolling Stone, with its new reduced size, and it made me sad. I don’t think it’s entirely due to nostalgia, but I liked the fact that it stood out from the others… it at least gave the appearance of something different (which can sometimes equate to something special). Now, when I thumb through it, it could just as easily be Entertainment Weekly. The magazine has been heading more and more towards the mainstream for years, and the new layout is just one more depature from its counterculture beginnings. This article by the Huffington Post sources out some of the reasons from the staff: "Change is part of our DNA," "We’ll get to print on glossier paper," "Reduced costs for advertising inserts," and, the ultimate, "Why not?" I have nothing against change, but this seems like the magazine is moving further and further away from its roots and down the path of becoming just another celebrity tabloid. -Michael
